The Foundation for the Elimination of Single Use Plastics, aka ESUP Now, is a non-profit grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address and end plastic pollution.

We organize focused campaigns that achieve measurable outcomes. We support research into the source, scale and impact of plastic pollution. We apply pressure on the national and local government to enact smart legislation that limits and eventually eliminates single-use plastics.

The Problem

Plastic is not biodegradable. Instead, it slowly breaks down into smaller fragments known as micro plastics, which contaminate our soil and water. Larger plastics clog our drainage channels causing flooding, which leads to massive losses and water-borne diseases. There are a myriad of effects that plastic pollution has on our environment as well as on human health and yet PET manufacturers continue to produce at an alarming rate in order to maximize profits.

These companies would not be able to get away with this in developed countries; they have taken advantage of the lack of regulation in Nigeria and it is time to hold them accountable. Plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue; it is a social justice issue. It is time for our government to enact smart legislation to protect our communities from the dangers of single-use plastics.
